Good to see a focus on 3rd grade literacy, however, the support for proficiency by 3rd grade as we all know begins well before then. In Irvine, CA, we have many city neighborhood parks which offer through the city, affordable part-day programs for preschoolers ages 3-5. In that half-day program, the curriculum is aligned with the state standards. This program in particular benefits the high number of immigrant children who enter these programs with very limited English language skills. It may be a cheaper option (to parents and local/state government) until economics improve than the private sector programs and allow more children to participate in a quality preschool experience. I wish MA the best of luck! You are doing it right!
